Trophic level decoupling drives future changes in phytoplankton bloom phenology

چکیده
Climate change can drive shifts in the seasonality of marine productivity, with consequences for food web. However, these alterations phytoplankton bloom phenology (initiation and peak timing), underlying drivers, are not well understood. Here, using a 30-member Large Ensemble climate projections, we show earlier initiation most ocean regions, yet changes timing vary widely by region. Shifts both induced subtle decoupling between altered growth zooplankton predation, increased predation (top-down control) playing an important role over much global ocean. Only limited regions is light limitation primary control changes. In extratropics, climate-change-induced phenological will exceed background natural variability end twenty-first century, which may impact energy flow webs. The authors future oceans, while century.

Progressive decoupling between phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing during an iron-induced phytoplankton bloom in the Southern Ocean (EIFEX)
Dilution experiments were performed to quantify growth and mortality rates of phytoplankton groups (as defined by pigment markers) for 5 wk in an iron-induced phytoplankton bloom during the European Iron Fertilization Experiment (EIFEX) conducted in the Southern Ocean. Rates could be reliably measured for the 2 main groups, diatoms and prymnesiophytes. Mean phytoplankton intrinsic growth rates ...
متن کاملFuture Climate Scenarios for a Coastal Productive Planktonic Food Web Resulting in Microplankton Phenology Changes and Decreased Trophic Transfer Efficiency
We studied the effects of future climate change scenarios on plankton communities of a Norwegian fjord using a mesocosm approach. After the spring bloom, natural plankton were enclosed and treated in duplicates with inorganic nutrients elevated to pre-bloom conditions (N, P, Si; eutrophication), lowering of 0.4 pH units (acidification), and rising 3°C temperature (warming). All nutrient-amended...
متن کاملLong-term changes in phytoplankton phenology and community structure in the Bahı́a Blanca Estuary, Argentina
The phytoplankton of the Bahı́a Blanca Estuary, Argentina, has been surveyed since 1978. Chlorophyll a, phytoplankton abundance, species composition and physico-chemical variables have been fortnightly recorded. From 1978 to 2002, a single winter–early spring diatom bloom has dominated the main pattern of phytoplankton interannual variability. Such pattern showed noticeable changes since 2006: t...
متن کاملCarbon acquisition of bloom-forming marine phytoplankton
Carbon acquisition in relation to CO2 supply was investigated in three marine bloom-forming microalgae, the diatom Skeletonema costatum, the flagellate Phaeocystis globosa, and the coccolithophorid Emiliania huxleyi. In vivo activities of extracellular (eCA) and intracellular (iCA) carbonic anhydrase activity, photosynthetic O2 evolution, CO2 and HCO uptake rates were measured by membrane inlet...
